How to calculate California sales tax
Multiply the pre-tax price by the combined rate. For $100 in San Diego at 7.75%, tax is $7.75 and the total is $107.75. To work backward from a tax-inclusive total, divide by 1 plus the rate. A $107.75 receipt at 7.75% divides to $100.00. Use the Remove sales tax tab above for this.
Sales tax versus use tax
If you buy taxable items from an out-of-state seller who does not charge California tax, you owe use tax at the same rate. Individuals report it on their California income tax return. Businesses report it on their sales and use tax return.
